More Than Rules: Finding Freedom And Purpose In Every Day Life

Another one,

I used to think being holy meant being perfect or following a bunch of rules. It felt too hard, like I couldn’t do it. But lately, I’ve started to see it differently. Holiness isn’t about being perfect—it’s about being free. Free from the things that hold me back, like bad habits, guilt, or just living without purpose. It’s about becoming who I was meant to be.

There’s this verse in Romans that says: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:1-2)

I used to think that sounded scary. Now I get it. It’s about giving my life to something that matters and letting God shape me. Not because I have to, but because it leads to freedom.

Change starts in my mind and relationships. I was stuck with worry for so long, especially with all the stress of Nairobi life and trying to make ends meet. I reached out to God, and felt like I heard, “You are free. Now go, live free.” That changed me. I started to believe I could live differently.

Letting go of grudges is part of this journey. It’s not easy in our culture where we sometimes hold onto tribal tensions or family feuds for generations. But I’m learning that forgiveness is necessary. I need people around me who help me grow. When I finally told my friends at the local community center that I needed help, I started to change in ways I couldn’t have alone.

Galatians 5:1 says, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

This has changed how I help others too. I used to think just giving money to beggars at traffic lights was enough. But real help isn’t about quick fixes. It’s about listening, building real friendships, and helping people find their own way. It’s about respect.

The Bible says, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

So what am I doing differently now? I’m trying to listen more before I help. I want to build real connections instead of just giving things. I’m learning to encourage others to take steps on their own. I’m checking why I’m helping—is it just to feel good about myself? I’m asking God for wisdom because I don’t have all the answers.

One verse that helps me is, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3)

I’m learning that living a good life and helping others isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being real, being free, and walking with others—even when it’s messy. These ideas aren’t just for church people. They’re for anyone who wants to live with purpose. I’m still figuring it out, but I want to keep growing in freedom and love—for myself and for those around me. I think that’s something we all want.
